Bunions
A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, causing the joint to push outward and the big toe to angle toward the other toes.
What Causes Bunions?
Bunions develop due to a combination of genetic predisposition, foot structure, and external factors such as tight or narrow footwear. Over time, the misalignment of the big toe joint can worsen, causing pain, difficulty with footwear, and secondary conditions like corns or calluses.
Symptoms
- A visible bump on the outside of the big toe joint
- Swelling, redness, or soreness around the joint
- Restricted movement of the big toe
- Corns or calluses where the first and second toes overlap
- Persistent or intermittent pain
Conservative Management
While chiropodists cannot reverse a bunion without surgery, we can help manage symptoms and slow progression. Treatment may include padding to reduce friction, custom orthotics to redistribute pressure, footwear recommendations, exercises to maintain joint mobility, and advice on when to consider surgical consultation.
